GRANEX® receives “Statement of Endorsement” from Lloyds Register

The Technical Qualification Plan for GRANEX®, submitted by Granite Power Limited has been reviewed in the fields of Electrical, Instrument and Mechanical systems and found to meet the requirements of Lloyds Register Guidance notes for Technology Qualification, and has received a Statement of Endorsement. This is the second of three steps Granite Power Limited has undertaken in the process of obtaining a comprehensive approval known as “Lloyds Register Technology Qualification”.   What is “Lloyds Register Technology Qualification”? Lloyds Register verifies that novel technologies will function within specific limits and with an acceptable level of confidence. Once completed this Technology Qualification will provide a robust methodology and systematic process that provides evidence that GRANEX will function as specified and with an acceptable level of confidence, prior to deployment. The Technology Qualification is a goal based approach to risk that can be applied to any technology, ranging from the unconventional LNG offloading arrangements to the integration of marinised gas turbines into topside process plants, as well as aerial vehicles and various renewable technologies. Solar GRANEX® Project receives award

From a selection of 16 finalists at the Institute of Engineers, Newcastle Region Excellence 2015 Awards held on 29 May 2015, the Solar GRANEX® project received the overall award.  Praise from the judges: “This project is leading edge being at the forefront of technology and innovation.  It strongly demonstrates the complete engineering innovation process of research, modelling, design, prototyping, scaling and the application to real world situations.  There is use of adapting available components combined with very original research which has produced a novel co-generation plant for delivering low cost heat and power.” The project utilises heat from three sources – solar thermal, gas backup (waste heat surrogate) and stored thermal energy – to generate power.  It demonstrates the use of the working fluid as the solar heat capture medium as well as the effectiveness of low cost thermal storage for power generation after sunset and during extended cloudy periods.  It utilises a sophisticated control system to optimally manage the heat sources being utilised for generation, or fed into storage, at any point.  It also enabled the development and deployment of a novel and highly sophisticated TurboGenerator (compact, magnetic bearings, semi-hermetic; very low maintenance). Extensive experience at Granite Power

The Granite Power team have worked in the energy industry for several decades and throughout this time have engaged in landmark projects with iconic global and Australian companies such as Babcock, ALSTOM and AE&E. The experience they gained from these and other projects has today been invested into development of our low cost zero emission waste heat to energy technology, providing energy solutions across the world, and research into future innovation. Some of these projects included 3 metallurgical furnaces providing 12.5 MWe of electricity to the BHP Temco Bell Bay site in Tasmania, a gas/oil fired boiler for a 60 MWe steam turbine plant at Alcoa’s Wagerup site in Western Australia and waste gas thermal oxidisers, heat recovery boiler plants, a standby thermal oxidiser and independently died super heater for the TiWest Kwinana site also in WA. ALSTOM projects featured a 76 MWe power plant utilising steam turbines and gas fired boilers for Murrin Murrin Nickel, a HRSG producing steam for an 80 MWe turbine at the Cockburn 1 plant and for Bluescope Steel Port Kembla a blast furnace gas (BFG) and economiser. AE&E projects for Western Australian sites Ravensthorpe Nickel, Sino Iron (CITIC Pacific) and Worsley Alumina included gas-oil fired boilers for 18 MWe turbines, 150 MWe CCGT blocks and 57 MWe circulating fluid bed...

Widespread interest in Granex® energy solution

Industries as varied as a sugar mill, cement kiln and iron ore mine have requested that Granite Power conduct feasibility studies demonstrating the benefits of our exclusive GRANEX® waste heat to power (WHP) technology. Granex supplying east coast grid

AUSGRID approved the connection of our GRANEX®solar thermal demonstration unit to the East Coast grid in late 2013. It features hybrid waste and solar heat generation – the solar thermal heat coming from an adjacent solar array. The ~35 kWe unit – installed at Wallsend in Newcastle – includes waste heat simulation (powered by a gas burner) to show waste heat being recycled as electricity.  Thermal storage ensures a constant energy flow during day time intermittencies (cloud) and evening periods. At its core is a G30 turbo-generator which operates at pressure of about 60 bar with waste heat moving at more than Mach 1.7 through the front nozzle and spinning the turbine blades at 70,000RPM. GRANEX®-generated electricity costs significantly less than that of genset power and it has zero emissions thus adding to the supply of ‘green’power in the grid. The unit also provides thermal heating for a neighbouring Olympic size swimming pool.
